It's tough to be a student in Ohio -- tuition at public colleges is above the national average, and the state keeps cutting funding for higher education. Paying for college through student loans doesn't make it affordable, it just keeps us in debt long after graduation day.

Dear Ohio Lawmaker,
To keep Ohio’s economy healthy and vibrant, we must make it easier for more young Ohioans to get the higher education they need to improve their chances of finding work and earning decent wages.
Tuition at Ohio’s four-year public universities is higher than the national average, and since the Great Recession, the state has cut its meager support for higher education by an additional 10 percent per student.
I support holding down tuition costs, but that objective must be coupled with additional investments by the state. Buckeye State students and families already pay – predominantly in the form of debt – for 62 percent of the cost of attending college. Without additional support from the state, Ohio will be forcing students to take on even more debt as this burden grows.
As Ohio’s economy recovers from the Great Recession and revenues rebound, now is the time for the state to renew its commitment to making college accessible and affordable for all. I urge you to restore funding for higher education to pre-Recession levels.
